Laveen is one of the "urban villages" within the city of Phoenix in Maricopa County. It is situated eight miles southwest of Downtown Phoenix between South Mountain and the confluence of the Gila and Salt Rivers.
Parts of Laveen constitute an unincorporated community in Maricopa County, while the remainder falls within the city limits of Phoenix.
The area was formally given the name Laveen after the first postmaster, Walter E. Laveen, around 1918.
Although Laveen has been home to alfalfa, cotton, and dairy farms since the 1880s, housing and commercial developments have been increasingly urbanizing the area.
As of 2014, Laveen’s population is 35,236 people. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 445.11 percent.
