Mesa is located about 20 miles east of Phoenix. It’s the third-largest city in Arizona, after Phoenix and Tucson, and the 38th-largest city in the US.
Initially inhabited by Native Americans and Spanish explorers, the area became US territory after the Mexican American War. Mormon pioneers founded the city in 1878; a large Mormon population remains there today.
